Everything You Need to Know About Invisalign
Learn more about clear aligners and answer the most common questions about Invisalign

As someone who was in braces for well over 3 years, I know firsthand how daunting getting braces can be. Nowadays, though, there’s an alternative – Invisalign! In this post, I’ll be sharing with you everything you should know about Invisalign, including what to expect from Invisalign, the average cost, the average time to complete treatment, and any other tips for clear aligners.
What is Invisalign and How Does it Work?
First things first, let's talk about what Invisalign is. Invisalign is a clear aligner system that uses custom-made trays to gradually shift your teeth into place. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is virtually invisible and can be removed for eating and brushing.
After a model of your teeth is taken – either digitally or with an impression mold – they are sent to the Invisalign where an orthodontic team reviews your case. A digital mock-up of your treatment is created that will tell the dentist how long your treatment will take and what your final results are predicted to look like. Your dentist will then review this information and make any modifications or enhancement based on your needs. From there, personalized trays are made for you. You will wear these trays for 22+ hours a day, for an average of 12-18 months. You will switch them out in two-week intervals as your teeth move.
Some Invisalign cases may require the dentist to place small tooth-colored material onto the surface of a tooth that needs to be rotated or pulled down. This can make Invisalign slightly more noticeable, but this is rarely a problem for patients. Once treatment is completed, these bonded areas will be removed.
Who Can Do Invisalign?
Almost anyone can do Invisalign – there is no age limit and it is safe for all patients! Invisalign was designed to close gaps, fix the bite, and straighten teeth. That being said, skeletal or jaw growth issues are better treated with traditional braces.
What is the Cost of Invisalign?
Invisalign tends to be slightly more expensive than traditional braces, and pricing will vary depending on where you live. The average cost of treatment can range from $3,000 to $7,000, and will be determined based on the complexity of your case and how long you will be in treatment. However, many dental insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment, so it's worth checking with your provider!
What can I Expect From Invisalign Treatment?
Despite the name, it is important to understand that Invisalign is not completely invisible. When compared to traditional braces, however, it is a much less noticeable treatment option. Other than improved esthetics, here are some other things to expect from your Invisalign treatment:
You will need to see a dentist before starting treatment. It is important that any decay or gum disease is treated prior to starting Invisalign. You will also want to monitor your oral health regularly while undergoing treatment.
You will need to wear your Invisalign trays for 22+ hours a day, but you will be able to remove them while you eat, drink, and brush your teeth. You’re not doing yourself any favors if you wear them less than you should!
You will have some soreness when you start wearing a new tray. Although you won’t have the same discomfort as traditional braces (think sharp brackets and swollen gums), you will need to give yourself time to adjust to the new aligners.
You will change your aligners every 2 weeks. Regular visits to your dentist every 4 to 6 weeks will ensure that your teeth are moving as they should be, and allow the dentist to make any adjustments as needed.
You will need to brush and floss after you eat and drink before putting your retainers back in. If you don’t, you provide a cavity-causing feast for the bacteria on your teeth.
What About After I Finish Invisalign?
After you complete any refinements or adjustments, you will need to switch out your Invisalign trays for a retainer. You will wear your retainer at night while you sleep to prevent your teeth from moving. Your retainers may need to be replaced every 5-10 years from natural wear and tear and the accumulation of buildup on the plastic.
Overall, I highly recommend Invisalign for anyone looking to straighten their teeth without the hassle of traditional braces. Just be sure to follow your dentist's instructions closely, maintain exceptional oral hygiene, and wear your aligners as directed!
